科学者たちは、人間の赤ん坊は丸顔に輝く目、ぎこちない動き、そして面倒をみたくなるような可弱さといった人間が可愛いと感じる特徴を併せ持っているので、大人は自分だけでは生きていけない赤ん坊の面倒をみて育て、育てられた子供たちが大人になると同様に自分たちの子供を作って育てるといったサイクルを繰り返すことによって、その種を継承していると考えている。
