最近動物の知性や認知能力に関する研究が進んでいる。その具体例としてサルがシロアリをとるために棒を用いるといった道具を使う能力、カラスがエサと得るために結び目をほどくといった問題解決能力、犬が人間の指示に従うといった教わったことを学習する能力、更に鏡に映った自分が分かるといった自己認識能力などがある。こういった知性や認知能力に関する研究を通して、動物研究家は動物たちが高い知性、認知能力を有していると結論づけている。

人間の行動で最も面白い特徴の一つであると考えられていた。
