Some European geologists thought the shape of today’s continents were not the same as the ones in millions years ago, but there had been no scientifically proved theory until the 20th century. 
First of that kind was the theory of plate tectonic developed by a German meteorologist Afred Wegener which assumed that the today’s continents were divided from one large continent and moved gradually to the current locations. 
Although the theory clarified the basic mechanism of the plates’ movement, it was later in the century when new discoveries, scientific evidence and theory of continental drift came out.
Today’s geology says that the earth’s surface consists of 40 plates that float on the mantle and move gradually over a long period of time.  (122 words)
